    NCAA Basketball and Baseball

I will of course talk nothing but Arkansas Razorbacks as far as sports go most of the time but maybe some others will take part (to talk about their crappy teams LOL) and I hope non members will join and join in. I think it would be a good thing for non members to see that we just don't talk game stuff even though I know many don't do forum text stuff as much as I and some others do.

Hogs beat Ole Miss tonight in the SEC basketball tournament even though they seemed rusty after a week off. They win when Manny Watkins and Moses Kingsley are involved in the game as the have been recently, Manny will not be playing in the NBA, Moses likely will. Tonight they threw the ball into Moses down low and even though he missed most of the shots it got him into the game, later it paid off with 3 blocked shots in the last 6 minutes. Manny, I don't know how to get him into the game but when you hear Chuck call 2 or 3 Manny plays, he knocks a ball off a guys leg out of bounds, his little *** takes it to the rim and scores on a breakaway, he gets a pass from Moses and hits a lay up, they win. They really don't need a win to get into the the big dance but it would help with seeding because Vanderbilt bet Florida 3 times this year, so beating them would be a damn good win.

Mike Anderson was under some pressure to win this year and make the tournament, he shouldn't have been under any. The fans, after the parting of Nolan Richardson wanted Mike (Nolan's chief assistant) if they couldn't have Nolan, we had to wait awhile for Mike to be able to come back. If anyone wants to know that story from inside the state you can ask in a reply.

Baseball. Hogs beat Rhode Island twice today. RH has to play down south because of the weather up there but they are a decent team. Hogs beat Bryant earlier, another Rhode Island team but Bryant beat them in an NCAA regional a few years ago and our coach is always looking for better northern teams to play early in the year. Hogs found a couple of young pitchers recently because they had to. Lost 2 pitchers to injury right at the start of the year but we got our second catcher back from a hand injury.

Ok Ok I get it but it is only you who get lewd and insulting, not me

Hogs beat Vandy, they are a different team than the one who lost to Kentucky earlier. If Kentucky figures you out though it doesn't matter how different you are.

I did not know Oregon was as good as they are, 29-4. They better hope I don't pick them in my bracket I know we have one Oregon fan here. Duke finally figured out the Irish and beat them.

What the hell is up with Lunardi saying Syracuse is in, 18-14, 7th in their conference. Yeah I know the ACC is tough but still. They just want to stick them in there because Jim Boeheim is getting old and might retire soon?

I figure its gonna be some school named North Dakota State University of Ohio at Chicago or some name like that that causes my bracket to go completely to hell. NDSUOC would be quite an acronym for CBS to have to fit in the little scoreboard.

Hogs have a decent record against the Tar Heels in any type game so maybe we might win. 3-3 in the shot clock era.

Aaannnnnndd it didn't work out that way. Hogs got tired and hurt, 3 guards (Macon, Beard, Barford) went out for several minutes at a time and Anderson couldn't get and keep the right combination in the game. Then the Tar Heels clamped down on defense at the end.

Baseball the Hogs swept 3 from Mississippi St. They aren't giving up walks, like they did last year and they are only striking out against the best pitchers nd even then they won Friday night. Coach has went more for a power game this year, more homer than I remember in a long time.

    Re: NCAA Basketball and Baseball

Nothing is more intense than Hogs v LSU in college baseball. Tonight the Hogs won after being swept last year in a 3 game series where they should have won 2 of the 3 and they led 9-1 in the 7th last year in one of the games. Tonight, same score in the 7th but this team doesn't have the same holes in it that team did and that team, as much as I love them, had many holes in it.

The intensity part. LSU is not as good as the Hogs this year in many respects, but Mainieri is a great coach and the pitcher tonight they had will be in the pros soon enough. Tonight the Hogs wore him out, though he didn't give up many runs. He just threw too many pitches to get the outs he got. Mainieri was yelling about something, though I am not sure what, he kept going up the tunnel to do it and the Hogs hitting coach kept yelling about something but he yelled into his own dugout while he did it. Tony Vitello, Hogs hitting coach was kept after last year, the pitching coach Dave Jorn was let go. Pitchers stopped listening to him but I'm sure Tony was told if they keep swinging at balls you're next. I think Tony, who is also the 3rd base coach, and and the LSU coach were yelling at each other but hid it.

I remember a game back in da day when the Hogs first joined the SEC when both Daves got thrown out, Van Horn and Jorn, Vitello tried to get thrown out but the umpires were onto the protest by then and Tony yelled for 5 minutes but finally figured out they were not going to throw him out. We don't have those crappy umpires anymore but it was kinda fun when we did.

According to what I've read Jorn has stayed in Fayetteville.
I credit coach Broyles and Dave Van Horn for doing it because the proof is in the pudding.?
Jorn said he intends to remain in Fayetteville
he played here, he is a legend here, just like Norm DeBriyn who he played and coached for, I don't want any anyone to die but we all do and I hope he dies here.

?I appreciate everything that coach Jorn has done for this program since I got here 14 years ago,? head coach Dave Van Horn said. ?He has turned this program into a top-25 program. and has put together some of the best pitching staffs in the country. There?s not a better pitching coach than Dave Jorn and he?s an even better person. He?s been a great friend to me and the rest of the coaching staff and always will be a man of great character.?

DeBriyn also spoke highly of Jorn and the impact he obviously had on Van Horn even when Van Horn was on staff as a graduate assistant.

?I lucked out in getting him as a young man because he was coming out of pro ball (as a pitcher) and we didn?t have much of a budget,? DeBriyn said. ?After a couple of years I realized we had something special there. Look at the track record. We go to Omaha in ?85, ?87 and ?89 (Jorn coached the 1989 staff through 1988 fall ball before joining the Yankees) ?and after he left us we never went back. Our pitchers got better. Not just mechanically but every way. He is intuitive. I think the game slows down for him.?
Now that Norm has retired, he never left afterwards, when they get him in the booth, he is a barrel of laughs. He is just as fired up as he was when he coached here.

    Re: NCAA Basketball and Baseball

Yeah LSU not as good as usual Bailing, how did that turn out? We lost 2 of 3 dammit.

Tonight the Hogs beat Georgia 5-4 in 10 to take a 2-0 series lead. Georgia outplayed the Hogs until the 10th when Georgia committed 2 errors to lose it. Pitcher fields the bunt that was supposed to move Lee to 2nd, he looks at second which the 1rst baseman should have not paid any attention to but he does and then he is not on 1rst to cover the pitchers throw to 1rst, so it sails into right field. Play is still going with men now on 2nd and 3rd when the right fielder grabs the errant throw and for some reason goes home with it even though Lee is going to stay on third, he airmails everyone with his throw, his arm did impress the play by play guys since he was 220 feet out when he did that. Lee scores and is dog piled by his team mates. Mostly because he worked a walk after being down 0-2. Lee also pitches but not tonight.

After the game I can hear the song in background and I catch it just as it says "The mourners are all singing as they drag you by your feet, but the hangman isn't hanging so they put you on the street." The Hogs were dead/hung, they blew a lead they didn't deserve to have in the 9th and then get a run they didn't deserve in the 10th to win it. But dats baseball, sometimes you win when you shouldn't and sometimes you lose when you shouldn't.

Hogs were playing ok tonight, not good but ok until it was announced that Auburn lost, which if they win puts them in first place. Then they start to make errors. They got away with it. Pressure.

The guy who does the music there is probably half my age or less, I wonder if he played that on purpose. Did he know the song almost as well as me and other old farts do.

    Re: NCAA Basketball and Baseball

    BRINGING THIS THREAD BACK!

First, they may have scored too many runs in the midweek game and had few hits left for the week LOL. I know thats stupid but it felt that way all weekend.

After the Hogs 7th comeback after trailing after 6 innings this year, today it was 5 runs. The best hitter didn't hit too well but the others finally made up for it and then the best player Christian Franklin comes through in the 10 with a double to score the winning run from 2nd.

Auburn played better than they had all year against the Hogs but still lost 2 out of 3.

The Hogs hit better against better pitching, I swear its that way. Auburn throws a lot of balls but didn't allow many runs. Thing is they eventually threw too many balls and the hogs got on base. last night they scored a run on 2 walks, a hit batsman and two wild pitches to win. Last week, Miss St. had 3 pitchers no one had scored on and we scored on all 3, they threw in the strike zone or close. Dave has drilled it in their heads not to swing at balls out of the zone like they used to 3 or 4 years ago. Their are certain balls out the strike zone they will take a whack at but those are hittable.

Ole Miss next weekend for the lead.

    Re: NCAA Basketball and Baseball

Hogs trailed in the first game by at least 12 points at times last night to Mercer. Some fans were texting one of the afternoon sports show hosts and they were losing their minds over this. They won by 13.

The show host said: "Some of yall need to calm down, Jesus if some you were submarine commanders and the light bulb went out in the bathroom you'd scuttle the ship".

Mussleman teams are always full of new players, he spends the first part of the season trying to figure out who plays well together and getting the defense right. Last year it took all the way into the conference season before he got it right, then they went to the elite 8.

    WOOOOO PIG SOOOOOOIE
    HOGS BEAT NUMBER 1
    AUBURN

Got out rebounded by a butt load got out shot by a little but just made one free throw after another and won. Largest crowd in the history of Bud Walton Arena, over 20k, and the students, man they totally threw Auburn off at the free throw line, they shot only 47% from the line. Loudest I ever heard it.

It was a high school basketball night so a crowd of 20k was was a surprise, they had to postpone a high school game that was nearby for the parking because they had an inkling that many were going to show up instead of letting their tickets sit unused. 20k on a Tuesday night is amazing.

I switched over to a high school game on the radio and when the game went to overtime and you could hear Hog calls in the crowd cause they were watching it on their phones or listening to it.

Crowd rushed the floor, likely a fine for that from the SEC but who gives a fart we got millionaires and billionaires who support the school to pay that.

They had to take coach Mussleman off the floor after the game when the crowd rushed the floor, he had rotator cuff surgery 3 weeks ago and his arm is still in a sling. He went back into the locker room and like he promised if they won he'd go shirtless and he was when he came back out.

    Re: NCAA Basketball and Baseball

Gonna play Vermont in the first round, everybody and his brother has this game on their upset alert. Could Vermont win, yeah they could. The thing is I think they base that off of the fact the Hogs start slow even at home almost every game, then the players and coach figure what the other team is doing and usually beat them.

They came back from 24 down to Tennessee and almost won at their place and beat them at home and the Vols are good, way better than Vermont.

Last year Colgate got the lead but the Hogs came back and won. Vermont plays a similar style.

If they lose this game there will literally be people passing out in their homes. They don't see this team as quite as good as last years but Muss has been the coach longer now and they expect another Elite 8 at least. Me, I picked them but I am prepared for disappointment cause Muss is bound to lose a game they should win.

Playin Teddy Buckets tonight but even though Hogs are holding him down they can't hit the broad side of a barn on offense. Audice Toney, 6ft 6 with long arms has got the assignment to stop Teddy, he usually gets the hardest guy to guard. The shooting is so bad or the defense is so good that the Hogs are just gonna get into the 20's and New Mexico St. may not get to 20 in first half

    Re: NCAA Basketball and Baseball

I know they'll want to do something to up the scoring in the tournament and maybe all of college basketball cause many of these games end up defensive battles like some old Bears Vikings game from the 60's but they are not fouling so theirs nothing to do. 26-17 is not what they want LOL.

Most college basketball teams have at most 3 scorers, some 4 but New Mexico has 1 and Arkansas has 3 on a good night but they play defense like nobodies business. Tonight we kinda got 3 with no points off the bench but they've held Teddy Allen to 5, unless he goes off like a bomb in the 2nd half Hogs should have this. The rest of them just don't score. J.D. Notae should do as he usually does and get better in 2nd half.

Hogs got to play Gonzaga, no one gives them a snowballs chance in hell. We'll see, the defense has to play almost perfect and they've got to hit more shots then they have been. Muss has several days to prepare.

Only SEC team left, Kentucky losing to St. Peters, a team I had never heard of, was so sweet, the look on Calipari's face, schadenfreude.

Only lost 1 final 4 team out of my bracket but the rest of it is broke all to hell.

    Re: NCAA Basketball and Baseball

They are letting them beat and bang on the inside but calling touch fouls on the outside, Hogs have to stop touching on the outside or Gonzaga is gonna spend the 2nd half on the line.

Usually the Hogs are on the line but they are not calling fouls on the inside, if they were calling fouls in there the Hogs would be up 15 as they drive more but this still kinda works for them cause they can foul on the inside as well and get away with it and Gonzaga has the bigs who play in there.

1rst team since I can't remember to knock off 2 number ones in the same year. In my memory this is the greatest win, against the spread and everyone's expectations in Razorback History. Mostly its that no one thought they would win except in this state.

Skip Bayless is griping that not enough fouls were called on the Hogs. At one point in the 2nd half the fouls were 7 to 1 and it was 7 called on the Hogs. Gonzaga had to foul at the end to get the Hogs to the line as they trailed.

SKIP BAYLESS CAN KISS MY BUTT

Okay Skip you wanted Gonzaga to win but to resort to lying to excuse their loss is awful freaking crappy of you. Drew Timme is as good as they said he was but the rest of Gonzaga, NO. If the Hogs were a good shooting team, WHICH THEY ARE NOT, the game isn't even close. The Hogs are defense first and thats why Gonzaga lost. The D got in their heads and they even missed wide open shots at times. Still Gonzaga is Drew Timme and a bunch a dudes who are decent to good basketball players.

If Houston and Texas Tech win its gonna be an old Southwest conference shootout in the Elite 8

    Re: NCAA Basketball and Baseball

Hogs sweep LSU in baseball. If I'm LSU fans I'm giving this new coach the side eye. LSU has a huge lead in the overall series against the Hogs. I mean even when they had much worse teams LSU would manage to get a game in a series. Friday, LSU didn't get a guy past 2nd base. Old coach Mainieri would have got a game.

Our pitching and defense is winning games this year, when and if the hitting comes along they will be damn near unbeatable. Well its a good thing we don't play Tennessee this year, not until the SEC tournament anyway. Hogs are getting better at least in the pitching/bullpen part. New dudes are coming out of the bullpen and just killin it. We got this freshman dude Gabriel Starks.

When you see him full body, he looks like a pitcher you'd make in a video game AND HE'S FREAKIN GOOD. Dave don't put him in as many pressure situations yet, he's a little behind the other youngins in experience but damn he kicks *** when he does pitch.

Our closer is a freshman who has 5 pitches but he flat out said as a closer he only uses 3 but today he brought out a 4th pitch, his change up and it killed. 2 weeks ago I wouldn't have been so sure of this but

THE HOGS ARE GOING TO OMAHA
Last year, they had a pitcher or two. Last year they got walks and hit homers. This year they got pitchers and they not only walk they get hits, singles, doubles, they play small ball, bunt runners over.

The offense last year caused Dave to pull pitchers if they walked a guy and gave up a single or two cause he didn't know if they'd score enough. If the other team didn't walk batters, well it would be single homers and you might not catch up.

Thats the reason they didn't get out of the Super Regional, the other team threw strikes and they didn't hit them.

A memory caused me to change my sig

okay, tonight the Hogs go down by 5 runs twice, pitching really aint doin crap. Then Rocko Riggio of Ok. St. homers and decides to point and stare in the the Razorback dugout, After that the Hogs kicked their azzes and win 20-12. You see I know why he did that, the Hogs aint done much recently but what moron decides to fire them up. Hogs hit 7 homers, some of them before that. The Cowboys walk and hit batters over and over and then they'd get driven in.

Now the Cowboys have to play a game early tomorrow and then play the Hogs later. Not sayin we got the regional but its gonna be hard for them to win it.

The teams have score an azzload of run on each other in the previous 2 games so this one, going on right now, she be a 3-2 game with the midweek starters and the sometimes relief pitchers pitching. "HERE'S THAT FRESHMAN WE'VE BEEN HEARING ABOUT BUT HAVE NEVER SEEN".

Both teams are out of pitchers really still some of them are coming back to pitch again tonight but I get the feeling we're gonna see pitchers we haven't seen much.

    HOGS WIN THE REGIONAL

Hagen Smith grows up. Smith is a freshman with a great arm but he had kinda fallen off for the last month and a half. Tonight Dave put him in the 8th and left him in the 9th and he came up big. I think Oklahoma State had run out of hits, they got down 12-0 to Missouri State and came back to win and then last night they came back to beat the Hogs and tonight, they just didn't hit when it was necessary.

Hagen Smith had blown up in his start earlier and they had to take him out but he hadn't thrown many pitches so he could come back tonight and kick azz and he did. Actually had hadn't pitched so bad in the start but he made and error and then someone else did and his mind wasn't right.

I talked about this a long time ago, Zach Smith, he would come in as the closer, walk a guy, hit a guy, strike 2 guys out, hit another guy, load the bases and Dave would leave him in there and he'd usually strike the last guy out for the 3rd out. It was the most nerve racking crap I ever listened to and I never figured out how Dave never even went out to talk to him but he didn't. He just knew he'd finish them off.

Tonight I think he thought "Hagen Smith has to grow up tonight or he never will" so he left him in there.

So they got to go to Chapel Hill to play in the Super Regional. Which is okay cause theirs this crap going on here that the Hog fans put too much pressure on the team. One of the players, who has only been here this year, said as much.

A local radio host managed to get himself kicked off the air for a week for getting mad and saying that player hadn't been here long enough (since had just got here from another school) to criticize the fanbase and calling the player a loser and basically a whiny baby. Yeah I know, that seems awful petty to kick a guy off the air but Hog fans got mad enough at a dude who had been on the radio here for 20 years that he got kicked off the air for a week.

Weird thing is that host has himself criticized the fanbase for being unrealistic. Anyway, he's back on the air and the Hogs won the regional.

Hagen had to grow up tonight or Dave would never trust him and he bygod did it.
