    World At War Campaign 29 Announcement!




    More information on the particular Divisions will be announced this weekend!




    Hi Guys we would just like to let you know how this new campaign will be set up.

    Firstly your 2 leaders for this campaign will be.

    TL Wir3tap for the Axis side running the 114th Jager Regiment.
    TL Squarebasher for the Allied side running the 2nd Marine Regiment.

    We will be playing 6 battles with 2 weeks of testing beta maps before that to make sure they work okay and also to give us some practice time.

    The battles will be played in RO2/RS campaign mode, with all players participating in the choosing of the territory to attack and the map pick. We will play RO2 campaign mode one week and the next week RS campaign mode, alternating though the 6 weeks, these campaigns will be played in realism mode. The first attacking side will be decided by a coin toss.

    We have had a lot of discussion between ourselves about how we deal with the levelling system in RO2/RS, we will let the levelling system run. It is pretty easy to rank up on our server we have plenty of bots running on it at the present time.

    One thing that might unbalance teams is the hero level, so we have decided not to allow hero ranks while playing campaign battles.

    RO2 = Red Orchestra 2 and custom German vs Soviet maps
    RS = Rising Storm and custom Japanese vs American maps

    Note that RS maps can be played without owning the game;
    only RO2 is required. However, you will have a much better
    game experience and be of greater use to your team if you also
    own RS. Without RS, you are severely limited on weapon choice
    and can not take advantage of level-up benefits for combat.

    Base game should be fine. I will have to see when we set the honor levels for everyone how it will affect those that don't own RS. It still might only allow you to get the RS initial weapons.

    hey i'd love to see some big maps tried out, maybe give tanking a fair shake. Something along the lines of the Arad map for RO1. Too bad they havent introduced any vehicles besides the tanks, such as kubels and hanomags.

    Unfortunately I won't be able to play this one as I don't own the game and I am broke (and will be for likely at least the next 6 months, if not longer). I hope you guys can get more people to show up than last campaign.

    Game is not really designed for Tournament play in WaW style but I could be proved wrong. But i am willing to give it ago, I need to download it.

    - The only tournaments i know of is TWL but that is team vs team or clan vs clan which would be between 5-16 people.

    With some variation on the WaW model, RO could work out. It has been stated in previous posts that RO is a mod of a mod for half life. The mod from which RO was created is the game on which this organization was built. With limited mission variety, the fundamental change the WaW model needs to deal with is the general lack of combined arms. A lot of the maps call for an attacking force to capture areas to move the map forward while some allow for the defender to counter attack. The capture-defend aspect is not unlike the BF engine in theme. However, the maps are generally smaller than FH so instead of assigning flags to a unit, ala FH, units would logically be assigned sectors of the front.
    There is seemingly room for subtle adaptations to the structure used in Day of Defeat in which we had 3 elements on each side, an attack unit, a defense unit and an infiltration unit. Which isn't vastly different from how FH combat typically developed.

    While there has been talk about mods and mod tools, from myself included, I am unaware of any significant work being done at present. Without more map options, I will find any campaign boring if it goes on too long as a result of playing the same maps over and over again.

    The pub events have been moderately successful, IMO, and allow for optimism enough to rationalize a campaign. It is also my opinion that RO is too constricting as of now to be more than a diversion or stop gap to allow further exploration into a new venue for the tourney. The worst that could happen is that we damage a reputation we don't have within a niche game while at best we could find RO is a good fit for us. The most likely scenario is that we may gain some new members while having some fun killing each other for a few weeks.

    Indeed it is slightly ironic that we have come back to our roots after over ten years because the gaming industry has essentially gone in reverse (at least for us). It's been so long since I've played DoD that I didn't even realize the connection at first, but then it all came flooding back.

    I am certainly looking forward to this campaign though, and I do think it can last longer than you might think.

    I don't know about that. There was a BFE for the original Call of Duty which (although less realistic) was otherwise exactly the same scope and size as RO2, arguably even smaller as it did not have tanks.

    And as I recall, BFE:CoD was a ridiculous amount of fun and the squad level tactics was probably better/more fun than the FH equivalent. If I was an infantryman, I'd be stoked for RO2.

    Generally any game can work in this format. I played in AWOT for America's Army and actually bfewaw for COD2. Red Orchestra should work very well under this and scale well for smaller turnouts as well as larger ones.

    I don't think my machine will run RO2 RS. My GPU has a 128 bit Bus. Both of the recommended ones have 256 bit buses. Please advise if, especially if you're running RO2 with Nvidia GTS 360M.
