Here is to hoping you can build computers better than you can punctuate sentences.

there is a big difference between the two, meaning computer building and poem composing.

I wouldn't leave da puter plugged in since this gives the mobo power even while "off" but it would be good to ground the case and as often as you can touch the case before handling any computer parts. I have handled many computer parts without a wrist ground with the computer plugged in or not. Do not work on it on carpet though and maybe work on it fresh out of the shower. Damp clothes and hair couldn't hurt a bit. LOL

Don't listen to me though I'm slightly crazy

It looks like a giant ball of cables !!!!

Heh,I love the way people can completely overcomplicate things that they dont understand(including myself) You kids crack me up,lol
    Its easy,
    #!)turn off computer
#2) unplug the power cord, due to the fact that most comps these days leave a .5 volt running to the motherboard, and sometimes certain RAM chips can be damaged if you unplug them while that teeny little 1/2 volt is still there
#3) Ground yourself by touching the metal case of the power supply,if any static is present,it will be discharged
#4) try to handle any cards or RAM chips by the edges and not any of the contacts

Oh,and one more thing,I noticed he said he wasnt sure if he had an AGP slot, and that his ethernet card might be in it????????

uhm,,AGP stands for "accelerated graphics port",Id love to see a ethernet card work in that slot,if you could even get it to fit,,lol
    BAD HORSIE!!!

You obviously have a limited understanding of electricity and electric circuits. If the computer is unplugged, there is NO ground.

By touching the case, you still reduce the potential between yourself and the components to zero. You may not be grounded, but you still can't damage the parts with ESD.

If you touch the components you also balance the potential between you and the components. It doesn't make it good practice.

    Your thing should read:

Most PSUs have a switch on them. Does this switch also break the ground connection?

C'mon Orange give the guy a break. Someone might say the same to you because unless the computer is floating in air it COULD have a ground. Hell, even the air can conduct electricity with the volts high enough.....sheeeesh

The first computer I bought was in 98, within 3 months I had taken it apart, ON a carpeted floor and put it back together on the same floor. I have done this to both I have owned over and over when putting in ram or video cards and a modem when one of those quit on me. Oh why I took it apart, until then I had never really touched a computer in my life and I wanted to see how the damn things were put together. I actually went too far in the disassembly and it took me way longer to get it back together but it still worked. In the off the subject part of this, I used to delete stuff from folders and had no idea what it was just to see what was needed and what was not. I do not recommend this as I had to system restore 9 times on that first one. Some of those were Win 98 problems but most were me.

    Yes

And if you're out in a thunderstorm, don't bother to get in car. You shoes COULD insulate you and your glasses COULD act as a Faraday cage.

Seriously, the proper way to do it is to leave it plugged. You can do as you wish, I have worked on non grounded PC on carpeted floor before too. I also drive without a seatbelt some times but I don't go around telling people to do so. This guy comes in the thread, pisses on everything that has been said and tells people the wrong way to do it.
